Kim Matthews Wheaton returns to Second Space with new work. Redolent with the retreating rays of the sun, these new paintings are executed with confidence, verve and solemnity. Having shown her work in Paris on many occasions, she takes an erudite approach to the vast landscape of her adopted home in Eastern Washington. Her perceptive renderings of our gorgeous natural surroundings help us to reexamine the light, the air and the powerful essence of the land that envelops us. Original works and prints are offered for sale.

The Second Space Gallery invites you to enter the juried exhibition entitled, “What Comes After Modern?: Architecture in the Course of Human Events”, to be held in Spokane, Washington during December 2011. We are looking for two-dimensional works in the following categories: Photography, Computer Renderings, and Painting. Work that succeeds will try to answer the theme question by establishing a connection between people and the buildings we inhabit. Also taken into account will be technical proficiency in the chosen medium, visual impact and unique or original interpretation of the subject. We invite working architects to submit spec drawings and dream projects for consideration. Over $1000 in prize money will be awarded to artists and architects based on the discerning appraisal of Meg Partridge.

About Meg Partridge

Meg Partridge is the Director of the Imogen Cunningham Trust, the organization established in 1975 to preserve and promote the work of Partridge’s grandmother. Please visit the Trust’s website at www.imogencunningham.com to find out more about the life of this fascinating photographer. Partridge also administers her father’s photographic legacy, The Rondal Partridge Archives.

While working as a cinematographer in the San Francisco Bay Area, Partridge directed and produced the Academy Award nominated short, Portrait of Imogen. Among her other projects are a film profiling her godmother entitled Dorothea Lange: A Visual Life, and a documentary about her father called, Outta My Light: Photographer Rondal Partridge.

Partridge has worked as an executive producer, producer, director and project manager for many companies; her client list includes Compaq, CKS, Computer Curriculum Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, Vivid Studios, Phoenix-Pop and Groundswell, Toyota, The Discovery Channel, Applied Materials, Fisher-Price, CenterBeam, Wineshopper, The History Channel, Nike, and Home Depot, as well as numerous others.

Raised in Berkeley, California, Partridge received a BA in Theater Arts and Arts Administration from Antioch College and an MA in Film from San Francisco State University. She and her husband live on picturesque Lopez Island.

Our roster of new and emerging artists continues to grow as we present Michael Burns. With a sly nod to readymade art and a knowing wink cast toward the color field painters, Burns has updated and burnished his predecessors’ work with digital flourishes and confident conceptual strokes. Paintings, sculptures and digital work are offered as an exploration of color as a spatial, even geographical form.

Show runs May 6th through the 28th.

The meaning of the word “amplify” is to “expand in detail”. In this series, Jessica LaPrade reinterprets the natural world by integrating technological and urban contrivances into her textural studies of nature. The resulting experience of interconnectedness allows the viewer’s visceral response a primary and urgent voice.

Jessica’s work will be on display through Saturday, October 30. Viewing hours are 12-5pm, Tuesday through Saturday, (Wed 12-4 pm).

Dani Pavlic’

“Zero Sum” is an exhibition that states unequivocally that there are winners and losers in any violent conflict. “La Violencia” that only recently became a part of the past in Guatemala is the inspiration and target of this one-person show. Dani Pavlic’ was adopted into an American home as a result of the civil war that was being waged in her native Guatemala. Her unique perspective as a cognitive outsider and biological insider drives her to turn out artwork that is both a work of discovery and a shaming indictment of the dangers of unchecked power.

Frequently using game theory to elucidate meaningful ideas in a way that acknowledges and denounces the codification of systematic repression, Ms. Pavlic’ offers a scorching critique of the actions of the United States-sponsored Guatemalan Army.

Jessie Rasche

Jessie Rasche is a talented, emerging artist with vigorous raw energy. She works in the confines of small canvases with limited scope, which naturally entices the viewer into an intimate experience with each work. Her enchanting, careful studies favor form and light to precise execution. This show will also debut two larger pieces, both of which will explore character and color, feeling and weight.

Glenn Carr

Glenn Carr began his life as a professional artist at a young age. As the son of a commercial sign painter, he was exposed to the craft of painting very early on. In his professional life, he veered away from painting and into architecture, studying at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. There he came in contact with Robert Venturi, Paul Rudolph and Robert Geddes, among other notables.

Peter Presnail

Peter Presnail is known for his intricate process of creating images in the unusual medium of oil pastel on paper. Using a process he pioneered, he affixes the paper to sheets of wood, then alternately builds and seals the surfaces to create his contemplative images. Working in a broad range of styles, Presnail’s subjects range from highly stylized houses, barns, jars and trees, to ethereal and enigmatic landscape scenes. He is a master of subtle colors and mysterious light.

Educated in painting and drawing at Saint Cloud University in Minnesota the where he received his B.F.A., he went on to take his M.F.A. at the Art Institute in Chicago. He is widely shown and collected throughout the U.S. and has received many awards for his talent.
